TakeAction Minnesota canvassed to support U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar in contested primary, and joined the Duluth Tenants Union for a daylong training in the fundamentals of organizing to build tenant power in the state.

14 members of People’s Action member group TakeAction Minnesota and the Duluth Tenants Union gathered for a daylong training in the fundamentals of organizing on May 18th, which included sessions on power analysis, self-interest and how to hold one-to-one conversations.

Seeking to build power as an organization and support the People’s Action nationwide Organizing Revival, these newly trained members set goals for how many one-to-one conversations they intend to hold, which could increase the size of their Tenants Union by more than four times. Several members and one TakeAction staff joined the team as evaluators on the path to becoming trainers themselves.

Then on July 15, Take Action members in Minneapolis welcomed volunteer People’s Action members from Washington State, Washington D.C., New York State, Illinois, Wisconsin and New Jersey for volunteer doorknocking to support the candidacy of U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar, who faces a stiff primary challenge from former City Councilman Don Samuels.

Representative Omar has been a longtime ally of TAMN, advancing national legislation for housing and environmental solutions, and rigorously refusing corporate contributions, unlike her rival.
